United States Naval Surgeon. An 1823 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's medical school, he entered the United States Navy in 1824.

Surgeon's Mate, 9 July, 1824. Surgeon, 3 January, 1828. Retired List, 7 February, 1863. Medical Director, Retired List, 3 March, 1871.

During the Civil War he helped re-organize the United States Navy medical department, often in the face of fierce opposition to his reforms.

He was the son of William Bache, and the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
