Notes for Walter Michener WALTON

Walter Michener Walton, 94, a retired mushroom farmer in Kennett Square, died last Sunday in Chester County Hospital, West Chester. He lived in Linden Hall, Kennett Square.
He was born in the Lambertown section of London Grove Township, attended the former Martins Academy and was a 1913 graduate of Kennett High School. He lived in the Kennett area until his retirement in 1968, when he moved to Florida. He resided in Florida until moving to Linden Hall four years ago.
Mr. Walton served in the Army and was a veteran of World War I. Upon his return, he worked in the trust department of Kennett Trust Co. for three years.
He then turned to agriculture and was a self-employed mushroom grower and farmer, working his 125-acre farm in New Garden Township. Mr. Walton achieved a bit of agricultural fame in 1928 when he grew 400 pounds of potatoes per acre, a feat for that time.
"As far as I know, it was a first in the state," said his son, Howard J. Walton II. "Of course, back in those days, they didn't have the kind of fertilizers they have today. But to me, I figure the conditions must have been just right at that time."
Mr. Walton served on the Farm Bureau and Mushroom Growers Association boards and was a past member of the Kennett Lions Club.
He was a birthright Friend and a member of London Grove Friends Meeting.
Mr. Walton was the husband of Mildred Ethel Walton, who died in 1978. In addition to his son, he is survived by a daughter, Julia W. Smedley; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
