PEALE, RAPHAELLE, artist, was born Feb. 17, 1774, in Annapolis, Md. He began painting portraits in 1804, but paid also much attention to the painting of still-life subjects, in which branch of art he was very successful. He died March 25, 1825, in Philadelphia, Pa.
