Notes for Edward TILGHMAN

Colonel Tilghman was high sheriff of Queen Anne County from November 5, 1739 to November 5, 1742; one of the Justices of the county from 1743 to 1749; a member of the Maryland Assembly from 1746 to 1771; Speaker of the House from 1770 to 1771; and in 1765 was a member of the Stamp Act Congress and one of the committee who drew up the remonstrance to Parliament. He is styled Captain in 1746 and Colonel in 1756, according to the House Journals of the State, indicating that he held these ranks in the militia of his county.
