Notes for Caleb Mercer SLOAN

C. Mercer Sloan, 88, of Oxford, died Monday February 20, 2006 at Jennersville Regional Hospital.

He was the husband of Laura Furniss Sloan, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Born in West Grove, he was a son of the late George W. and Mary Mercer Sloan.
Mercer was a 1935 graduate of Avon Grove High School and a 1939 graduate of Springfield College.
Mr. Sloan served in the Army Air Corp for 3 1/2 years during WWII.

Mercer was the owner of Sloan Ford in West Grove and also had Sloan Motors in Downingtown, retiring in 1981.

He served as director for the United Way of Avon Grove for 10 years, as school director for Avon Grove schools, and as a lay reader for the West Grove United Methodist church.

He was awarded the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce "Outstanding Citizen Award" for distinguished community service.

He was one of the founders of the Avon Grove Recreation Association.

He served as scout master of Troop #30 Boy Scouts of America for 20 years.
During that time, 23 boys earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

He was elected board member for Big Brother/Big Sisters of Chester County, serving for 12 years.

Survivors include, in addition to his wife, two sons: Robert A. Sloan and his wife, Oxsana, of Gum Tree, Pa., and William M. Sloan and his wife, Karen, of Delaware; one daughter: Mary E. Bradley and her husband, Larry, of Exton, Pa.; two granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers.
