Notes for George Wesley SHARPLESS

George W. “Sharpie” Sharpless, age 83, of Venice, FL and formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2016. Born in Chester, PA, he was the son of the late Anna C. McDonald. Sharpie graduated from Chester High School in 1951 where he was a star basketball player. His basketball days tragically ended after an accident in 1951 that resulted in the loss of his right leg. Known for handling the accident with a “stoic philosophy”, it never stopped him from doing anything. In 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia A. “Pat” Spragg. In 1965 Sharpie and Pat moved their family to Wilmington, DE. Sharpie’s career as a restauranteur spanned over 40 years. In 1955 he opened Sharpie’s Sandwich Shop on the Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE, and later a second location was opened in the F&N Shopping Center in Wilmington. In the early 1970s he purchased the Coach House Restaurant in Claymont. At the Coach House, Sharpie could always be found in his usual spot treating his many long time employees and customers as family. In 1998 Pat and Sharpie sold the Coach House and retired to Florida. Sharpie loved and owned several harness race horses. He enjoyed watching his horses race (and especially win) at the Brandywine Race Track. Sharpie also enjoyed entertaining family and friends at his summer home in Stone Harbor, NJ. Whether it was renovating the shore house, going on boat rides or just hosting a meal, Sharpie always made sure people had a good time. As his health declined in recent years, Sharpie was cared for at home by his devoted and loving wife. He was preceded in death by a son, George W. “Little Sharpie” Sharpless, Jr., in 1960. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Sharon Mitchell (Wayne) of Winchester, MA, Suzy McAllister (Charlie Congdon) of Cochranville, PA, and Stacie DiGiacoma (Dave) of Wilmington, DE. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Jason, Nicole, Victoria, Heather, Cassie, Destiny, Bethany, McKinley, Justis, Grace, Matthew, and Daniel. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tidwell Hospice, 220 Wexford Blvd., Venice, FL 34293 or to a charity of your choice .
