Notes for Donald Raymond HICKS

Donald Raymond Hicks, aged 91, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2015 after a full and active life. Born in Marshallton, Delaware on November 18, 1924, he was the only son of Morgan J. and Viola P. (Lind) Hicks. A graduate of Henry C. Conrad High School, Donald served in the U. S. Marine Corps as an aircraft armorer in the Pacific during World War II. At the end of the war, he returned home attending the University of Delaware and graduating from Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia.

A master carpenter and cabinetmaker, he helped to build Brandywine Raceway, where he worked as a superintendent for nearly three decades.

Don was a outdoor enthusiast, enjoying hunting, fishing, trap and skeet shooting and golf. He also loved music and had a beautifully trained voice. He will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, a loyal friend, generous host and master storyteller.

Donald was predeceased by his son, Gary Morgan Hicks. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Lynam (Yearsley) Hicks, his daughter, Donna Hicks Melton, her husband Dennis, a grandson, Michael Melton, a niece, Patti Yearsley Jones and a nephew, David W. Yearsley.

The family is enormously grateful for the care and support of everyone at Ware Presbyterian Village. Don often remarked, "I just can't understand where they find so many nice people," regarding many of the people who supported and cared for him as dear friends. In addition, the compassionate support of Willow Tree Hospice during the last weeks of Donald's life is deeply appreciated.
