Notes for George Lester Jr. DOWNS

G. Lester "Les" Downs died on October 16, 2015 age 89 . He was along time resident of Broomall.
He graduated from Marple Newtown High School in 1944 and served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe. Les was devoted to his family and especially dedicated to his hometown of Broomall. He served the community of Marple Township his whole life as a Marple Township Police Officer, Fire Fighter and Volunteer.. He was a lifetime member of the Broomall Fire Company serving as President for 14 years and helping run the Annual Fund Drive. He was also made an honorary member of the Marple Ambulance Corp. He volunteered as a coach and umpire for the Broomall Little League from 1967-1983. He was very involved at the historic Massey House and enjoyed giving tours to school children. Les joined the Marple Township Police Force on September 26, 1960 and retired September 10, 1987 after 27 years of service. Les received many awards and citations from local and state government officials for his many years of community service . He was lifetime member of Marple Presbyterian Church.
He was the beloved husband of the late Bertha (nee Riedel) who died November 30, 2014. They married in 1951. Devoted father of Leslie Zaborsky(Jerry), Lorraine Jacobs(Keith) and Scott Downs ( Barbara). Loving grandfather of Justin, Amanda, Keith, Drew, Ryan and the late Kyle. Great-Grandfather of Dylan and Ash.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home Sproul & Lawrence Roads Broomall. Additional viewing Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at the Marple Presbyterian Church 105 N. Sproul Road Broomall followed by his Funeral Service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the above named church or the Thomas Massey House P. O. Box 18 Broomall, PA. 19008
