Notes for Hammond Skipwith CARR

Funeral services for Hammond Skipwith "Skip" Carr, 70, longtime community activist and resident of Round Bay in Severna Park, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park.

Mr. Carr died of a sudden heart attack Sept. 15 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

He entered the real estate business in 1954 with Charles F. Lynch, and worked part time with Clif Dawson as night manager. By 1958, he had opened the firm of Hammond S. Carr and Associates Inc., merging it in 1985 with O'Conor, Piper & Flynn, where he was senior vice president.

At the same time he opened HSC & Associates Inc., a real estate consulting and appraisal firm.

He served as president of the Anne Arundel County Board of Realtors in 1967. In 1986, he was elected president of the Maryland Association of Realtors, having served five years on its board of directors. He also served nine years on the board of directors of the National Association of Realtors.

He was twice named Anne Arundel County Realtor of the Year. In 1987, he received Maryland Realtor of the Year honors and was inducted into its Omega Tau Rho fraternity.

Born in Baltimore, Mr. Carr attended Annapolis High School and Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. He left high school in 1943 to enlist in the Merchant Marine as a seaman. Two years, later after graduation from Officer Candidate School in New London, Conn., he was commissioned an ensign and a Third Officer in the Merchant Marine.

He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1948 and spent a total of seven years at sea. When he left the Merchant Marine in 1950, he was a chief officer and a lieutenant. After sea service, he became an instructor and night manager for the Easy Method Driving Training School as well as an estimator and supervisor for the Sidney Sappington Corp., mechanical engineers and contractors.

Mr. Carr was a director or committee chairman of the Severna Park Chamber of Commerce, the Severn River Association, the Greater Severna Park Council and Severn School.

He also was a member of St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, ASPIRE, the Anne Arundel Community College board of trustees, the Annapolis Yacht Club, the Southern Maryland Society, the Old South River Club and Chartwell Country Club.

In 1958, he married Beverly Scott, who died in 1981. He married Jane Nute Cloud in 1983.

Also surviving are one son, Hammond Scott "Chip" Carr of Severna Park; five stepchildren, Jean A. Bicks of Severna Park, Dana S. Bicks of Hot Springs, Ark., David E. Cloud of Dover, Del., Susan C. Priest of Reisterstown and Timothy N. Cloud of Severna Park; 12 grandchildren; and one brother, William Lyles Carr Jr. of Bozman, in Talbot County.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, Ritchie Highway and Robinson Road. Burial will be private.
