Notes for Louise Hemstreet HILLER

Louise Hiller Poole died peacefully on May 22, 2008 in her apartment at the Methodist Country House in Greenville, DE.

Louise was born April 26, 1911 in Flushing, NY. She was the seventh of nine children born to Helen May and Charles Eldredge Hiller. Following graduation from Swarthmore College in 1933 with a BA in English, she worked for the New Bedford Standard Times writing articles for the obituary and society pages, and later human interest feature articles. On September 11, 1935, she married William Poole of Wilmington, DE, son of Edward Gilpin and Louise Fahnestock Poole, in the Friends Meeting in Mattapoisett, MA. Their marriage continued for over 61 years until William's death in 1997. Louise dedicated her life to making a loving home for her husband, 4 children and 2 AFS exchange students who called her Mom. Though raised a Quaker, Louise was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She lived by the Quaker values of peace, simplicity and equality, opposing violence and accepting everyone as a friend.

Louise is survived by 1 sister, Martha Lorraine of Mattapoisett, MA; and 4 children, William Poole, of Elkton, MD, Richard Eldredge Poole of Henlopen Acres, DE, Stephen Carroll Poole of West Chester, PA, and Virginia Poole Bainbridge of Ledyard, CT. Over the years spouses of her children and grandchildren, 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren have been added to the circle of her family. Louise will be missed by her family and friends for her warmth and humor. Her quiet love and acceptance touched many lives.

There will be a gathering for remembrance of her life on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pennsylvania Ave. at Rodney Street, Wilmington, DE at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Louise and William Poole Family Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation, 100 W. 10th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
