Notes for Robert W. DEVANEY

Robert W. Devaney of Honey Brook Robert W. Devaney, 84 of the Tel Hai Retirement Community of Honey Brook, died on Sunday, April 19, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at the Brandywine Hospital, following an illness. He was born on March 19, 1931 in Berwyn. He was the son of the late Charles and Grace (Thomas) Devaney. Robert was the husband of Dorothy J. (Hunt) Devaney, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. He grew up near Sugartown and attended Willistown School, Tredyffrin Easttown High School and graduated from West Chester High School in 1949. He was resident of Chester County since birth, except for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was attached to Utility Squadron 4, Chincoteague, Va. He retired from AT&T in 1984 after 29 years of service in West Chester, Coatesville, Philadelphia and King of Prussia with Bell of PA. He then started his own telephone installation/service company, which he enjoyed for about 10 years. Prior to his Navy stint he was a horseman and saddler and has always loved following the foxhounds and the Silver Eagle Bassets. He often claimed that dogs were his favorite people. He built his first home near Lionville in 1959 and resided on Milford Road until 1988 when he moved to Chester Springs. He was an active fireman with the Lionville Fire Co for many years and served as President for a short time. An active hunter and fisherman, he was a charter member of the Green Tree Hunting Club, which he and some friends started in 1959. He loved Canadian lake fishing and Maine fly-fishing. He was also a great fan of all types of auto and motorcycle racing; he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He was an active aviator for more than 30 years. He learned to fly at Shannon Airport near Thorndale. He was a charter member of Chapter 1250 Experimental Aircraft Association. He completed building his own plane in 2005 after more than 3 years of almost full time work/fun. He flew the maiden flight on April 9, 2005. Robert was preceded in death by a sister, Joan. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Debra (Ed) Carey, a son R. Jeffrey (Christine) Devaney, two brothers, William and Richard Devaney, and two sisters, Nancy Springborn and Virginia Somers. There are also two grandchildren, Michelle and Ryan Merrick and four great grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert will be held on Monday, April 27 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Tel Hai Retirement Community, 3100 Tel Hai Circle, Honey Brook, Pa., with Pastor Tim Herr officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
