Deceased Name: William S. Stokes Jr.
William S. Stokes Jr., 84, former paper company executive and member of First City Troop, died of complications from Parkinson's disease Friday at Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square. He had lived in Berwyn.

In 1968, Mr. Stokes helped organize the Pennsylvania Pulp & Paper Co. in Bala Cynwyd, which produced commercial paper for book publishers and commercial printers. He served as president of the company until retiring in 1983.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Stokes served with the Army during World War II and commanded a cavalry reconnaissance troop in Europe.

Mr. Stokes was a member of the First City Troop, which was organized during the American Revolution. He was past troop commander and served stints in Germany and during the Korean War.

Mr. Stokes served more than 30 years in the Pennsylvania National Guard and retired in 1971 as a brigadier general, his family said.

He was past president of the board of managers at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. His memberships included Radnor Hunt Club, Racquet Club and Merion Cricket Club.

His hobbies were sailing, horseback riding and polo.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 60 years, Sarah-Lee Biddle Stokes; son David B.; daughter Sarah-Lee Stokes; a brother; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at St. Davids Church, 763 S. Valley Forge Rd., Burial will be private.
