Notes for Martha WEBB

Mrs. Martha Webb Purcell, the widow of John Purcell, died at 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Gray, No. 1008 Park avenue. The deceased had been in poor health for a year or more and had been confined to her room by sickness for several weeks, although she greatly improved and was supposed to be on the road to recovery. Yesterday morning, however, she was taken suddenly ill and lived but a short while after the unexpected attack. The funeral will take place to-morrow, the hour of arrangements to be announced later. The interment will be in Hollywood.
Mrs. Purcell was born December 14, 1820, in Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Commodore Thomas Tariton Webb, of the United States navy. May 30, 1843, she married John Purcell, of Richmond, establisher of the wholesale drug firm of Purcell, Ladd & Co. Mr. Purcell, at the outbreak of the Confederate war, equipped the famous Purcell Battery.
Ever since her marriage she lived in Richmond. She was active in charitable work during the Confederate war took a prominent part in the hospital service. She was one of the organizers of the Hollywood Memorial Association and honorary vice-president of that body. A member of St. Peter's Cathedral she was a devout Christian and her long life of activity in ministering to the poor and sick endeared her to hosts of Richmond's people.
Mrs. Purcell is survived by the following children: Col. John B. Purcell, Mrs. Nora P. Leary, Mrs. Alfred Gray and Mr. Benjamin L. Purcell, all of Richmond. A number of grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive her, as do her two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Cranz of this city, and Mrs. Harriett A. Rielly, of Norfolk.
