Notes for James Thompson BELL

James Thompson Bell, A lifelong resident of Philadelphia and a locally know blues musician, Jamie Bell, 55, died on May 16. He was a talented guitarist and singer, performing regularly at Fran's Pub, Kenny's Spirited Eatery and other venues. He was also a passionate golfer, winning club championships at Gulph Mills, and Prouts Neck, ME, where his family has summered for three generations. Jamie is the son of the late George Bell, former CEO of Janney Montgomery Scott; and the late Roberta McVey Bell. His paternal grandfather, John C. Bell, Jr., was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of PA; his great uncle was Bert Bell, the first Commissioner of the NFL, and an early owner of the Philadelphia Eagles. His maternal great-grandfather, J. Howard Pew, was former CEO of Sun Oil, and a scion of the Pew family. Jamie was a 1977 graduate of The Chestnut Hill Academy, a 1982 graduate of Hobart College, and went on to earn a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University. He completed basic U.S. Marine training at Parris Island, GA. He worked as a researcher and writer for Golf Magazine and, later, as a stock broker for Janney Montgomery Scott. Jamie was a devoted husband, step-father, brother and uncle. His laughter, his dedication to music, and his enthusiasm for golf, fishing, and his varied subject interests made him always a lively conversationalist and a dear friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Susannah Baker Bell; his step-daughter, Tabor Story; his sister Sophie Bell Ayres, and brother George Bell, Jr.; as well as four nephews and a niece. Donations can be made in his name to The Chestnut Hill School.
