Mrs. Coates was an officer of Rapides Bank, retiring with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Association of Bank Women, American Business Women's Club, a charter member of Baptist Hospital Auxiliary, Matinee Music Club, past president of the Quota Club of Alexandria and the Credit Woman's Club. She was a board member of the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital Auxiliary for several years. She was a member and served as president of the State of Louisiana Hospital Auxiliary. She also served on the boards of the American Cancer Society and the Heart Association.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, J. Lamar Mizell.
She was survived by her husband, Walter L. Coates of Alexandria; her daughter, Janelle Mizell Allen of Alexandria; her stepson, Norman Coates of Dallas; her sister, Irene Birchfield Smith of Alexandria; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
