William M. Barnes of Pomeroy Heights

William M. Barnes, 86, formerly of Pomeroy Heights, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Hickory House Nursing Home, Honey Brook.

He was the husband of Florence Davis Barnes, with whom he had shared 23 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeannette Kapinski Barnes, who died in 1979.

Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Walter and Anna Martin Barnes.

Bill graduated from Pierce Business School, attended Penn State University, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was an engineer at Lukens Steel Company, retiring in 1982 after 42 years of service.

He was a member of Olivet United Methodist Church for over 75 years. He served as past District Governor of the Lions Club of Coatesville, where he was also a past president. In addition, he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

He also was a member of Brandywine Goddard Lodge No. 383, F.& A.M.; was inducted into the Coatesville Hall of Fame; was a member of the Coatesville Senior Center; participated in the 1992 Close Up Foundation in Washington, D.C.; served as a director of the Chester County Blind Association; and was a member of Lukens Veterans Guild, serving as secretary.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jane Barnes of Spartanburg, S.C.; a son, William M. Barnes Jr. of York, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Cynthia Mallalieu of East Fallowfield; a stepson, Jack Coldren of Sadsburyville; a brother, Harold Barnes of East Fallowfield; two step-grandsons; and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Patterson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at the Harris-Mountain Funeral Home, 1030 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, 610-384-1091.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, with Masonic services at 7:45 p.m., and also from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville.

In his memory, contributions may be made to Olivet United Methodist Church Building Fund, 310 E. Chestnut St., Coatesville, PA 19320.
