Rachel Hicks Neff of Kendal at Longwood
Rachel Hicks Neff, a resident of Kendal at Longwood, died on Monday, Aug. 25, 2003.
The youngest of 11 children of William and Anna Pratt Hicks, was born in West Goshen on Nov. 8, 1909.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Anna and Amy and brothers, Charles, Edgar, Earl, Casper, William, Leroy, Russell and Ira Hicks, as well as her husband, Thomas J. Neff.
Survivors include her daughter, Rachel Neff Neville and husband, Aubrey of Elgin, Ill.; her son, Edward W.S. Neff and wife, Jeanne, of Troy, N.Y.; "surrogate daughter", Margaret Herring of Frederick, Md.; grandchildren, S. Eric Neville and wife, Dema, Andrew Neville and wife, Eileen, Jon Neville and fiancé, Susannah, all living in the Chicago area, Carrie Neff Mitchell and husband, William of Fairport, N.Y., Edward W. S. Neff III and wife, Tina, of Franklin, Tenn., and Brian Kammer and fiancé, Aimee, of Atlanta; and great-grandchildren, Emma, Max, Matthew and Katelyn Neville.
Rachel Hicks was a graduate of The George School and attended Drexel University.
She married Tom Neff in August 1936 and moved to Wheeling, W. Va., where she lived until moving to Kendal in 1988.
An active community volunteer throughout her life, she was loving and well loved, respected by all who knew her.
She endeavored to live according to Quaker values of tolerance, patience, generosity and simplicity; she understood that change was an important element of life and embraced it in herself and others.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at Goshen Friends Meeting, 814 N. Chester Road, West Chester, Pa 19380.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kendal at Longwood Reserve Fund, P.O. Box 100, Kennett Square, Pa 19348 or to Goshen Friends Meeting.
Arrangements are being handled by Founds Funeral Home Inc. West Chester.
