Deceased Name: GORDON TOWNSEND WAY, 80, CHEMICAL EXECUTIVE
Gordon Townsend Way, 80, an executive in the pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals industries, died of cancer Thursday at his Devon home.
He was born in St. Davids, descended from the early settlers of the area. He attended Radnor High School and the Haverford School before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. He later completed a one-year graduate-level course in New York University's business executive program.
He was personnel director and research manager for Smith, Kline & French before he and the late Henry Bea formed Beway Co., distributors of chemicals and pharmaceutical materials. He later joined F.G. Okie Inc., which also specializes in chemicals and pharmaceutical materials. He retired in 1980 as that company's president and chairman.
As a retiree, he worked in sales part-time for the R.W. Hartnett Co., specialists in printing machinery for the pharmaceutical industry.
He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Philadelphia Drug Exchange, the Philadelphia Graphic Arts Association, Old St. Davids Church, St. Davids Golf Club and Wawanock Country Club in Walpole, Maine.
He loved golfing and boating and spent summers at his home in South Bristol, Maine.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Schinler Way; a son, Gordon Jr.; a daughter, Carol Walsh; a brother, Pennington Way; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. tomorrow at Old St. Davids Church in Wayne. Burial will be private.
