Notes for George STEELE

George Steele of Kennett Square George Steele, 93, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, August 20, 2012, at Crosslands, Kennett Square, where he resided for the past 17 years. He was the husband of Anna Davis Steele of Kennett Square and the late Rhoda Eleanor Brown Steele. Born in Pocopson, Birmingham Township, he was the son of the late Hugh Exton Steele and the late Katherine Spague Stevens Steele. As a birthright Quaker, he was an active member of Birmingham Friends Meeting. George was a 1936 graduate of West Chester High School and attended Penn State University in State College. George was a lifelong dairy farmer until his retirement in 1985. The four generation Geoel Farm was recognized as a Century Farm for over 100 years in the dairy industry. In 1964, he began his career with Agway, Inc., serving on the Board of Directors for 18 years then became Chairman of the Board for an additional 12 years. He retired from Agway in 1985. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Cooperative in Chester County and Harrisburg. He served on the board of Farm Credit Banks in Baltimore, Md. for 18 years and the Federal Farm Credit Bureau in Washington, D.C. for 5 years. George was a past supervisor in Birmingham Township for 18 years. He was Past Master of Brandywine Grange #60, Past Master of Chester-Delaware Pomona Grange #3 and served Pennsylvania State Grange for over 14 years as an elected officer including State Steward and State Overseer. He was also a member in the Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, George B. Steele (Patricia Mills), James P. Steele (Lois Buffington) and Richard H. Steele (Sandra Cocciolone), four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service, 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, at the DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc., 410 North Church Street, West Chester, PA 19380, 610-696-1181, www.DellaFH.com, where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery in West Chester.
