Notes for Dale K. MILLER
Dale K. Miller (aka Dusty) from Wycombe died at his home on January 3, 2012. He was 90.
Son of Thelma Black Miller and Winfield Scott Miller, he was born in Philadelphia and raised in Langhorne PA. In 1941 he joined the US Army Air Forces, served for 5 years, and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. Thereafter Dusty attended Millersville State Teacher's College where he earned his B.S. and was class president. Following graduate studies at the University of Arizona, Dusty started his teaching and coaching career at Council Rock High School. In 1961 he took a position coaching football at George School, Newtown PA and then joined the science faculty where he taught for 25 years.
Dusty was an avid sportsman. He played baseball and football throughout high school and college. He coached football and started the golf team at George School. During his long tenure as teacher, coach, and mentor he touched the lives of many students and colleagues. Dusty spent many Saturday mornings on work detail supervising the George School 'bandits'. One of his most significant contributions was to design and construct the Alternative Energy Center at George School, hand built by students, faculty and volunteers. The greenhouse, windmill, renewable food and energy center served as a prototype for third world countries and as an educational resource. Dusty was invited by the Peace Corps to go to Lesotho and Sierra Leone to share his environmental and educational expertise.
During summers, Dusty stayed busy in educational and sports activities running camps and developing curriculum. He and his wife directed Camp Onas, a Quaker resident camp for 10 years. Dusty was a long time active member of Wrightstown Monthly meeting. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, gardening and home preservation.
Dusty is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Pusey Miller and their 4 children, Elizabeth Griffin, Suzanne Mandala, Steve Miller and David Scott Miller. His clan also includes 4 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His sense of humor and strong hand grip will be sorely missed by his family, friends, golf and fishing buddies, and the many "Harriets, Marys, Wilsons and Spaldings" that he taught over the years.
A memorial service will be held on Jan 21, 2012 at 11 A.M. in the George School Meeting House. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to Wrightstown Monthly Meeting 535 Durham Road Newtown, PA 18940
