Notes for Byron McClain COCHRAN

B. McClain "Mac" Cochran of West Chester passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Sept. 10, 2009.
Born in West Grove, he was the son of the late J. Byron Cochran, auctioneer, and Etta Neel Cochran, teacher.
He was also the brother of the late Francis Cochran Smith, nurse.
Mr. Cochran had lived at Brandywine Hall for six years.
A 1937 graduate of Avon Grove High School, Mac enjoyed participating in class reunions.
Educated at West Chester State Teachers' College (now University) he was the second of three generations of Cochrans to earn a degree there. He proudly attended the 60th reunion of the class of 1941.
Always an educator, Mac held a number of teaching positions and served as teacher, coach, headmaster, principal and supervising principal.
A lifelong member of Christian Endeavor, Mac was known as a spirited song leader and preacher in CE unions across several states. He held offices in the Chester County Union, Pennsylvania Union, National Capital Region Union, International and World CE Unions. For four years, Mr. Cochran was field secretary for Pennsylvania Christian Endeavor Union.
In 1957 he became general secretary of the Pennsylvania State Sunday School Association in Harrisburg. Mac spent 27 years training teachers of Sunday schools throughout the commonwealth.
He retired from the Sunday School Association in 1984 and returned to West Chester, where he was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and served on the education committee.
He was also active with AARP of Chester County.
Mac played church league softball, enjoyed golf, fox hunting, traveling and bridge.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Josephine B. Cochran of West Chester; three children, Mick, Connie and Barry Cochran, all of Harrisburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
