Deceased Name: MARY CARTER DORRANCE, 75, GARDENER AND VOLUNTEER
Mary Carter Dorrance, a passionate gardener and the wife of former CoreStates chairman G. Morris Dorrance Jr., died of cancer Thursday at her home in Villanova. She was 75.
Mrs. Dorrance was born in Philadelphia and grew up on Delancey Street. Her future husband was a neighbor.
"I used to claim that we began to court when I was five, but she would never put up with that," Mr. Dorrance said yesterday.
Mrs. Dorrance served as president of the Gardeners Garden Club and was a horticultural judge with the Garden Club of America for many years. She won many prizes at the Philadelphia Flower Show and Philadelphia Harvest Show. From 1979 to 1984, she was a member of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Council.
In addition, she was involved with the Pocket Parks Program of the Philadelphia Committee of the Garden Club of America, a program that helped transform vacant lots into community gardens.
In the last few years, she had turned her interest toward daffodils, her husband said.
Mrs. Dorrance contributed to the community in other ways. She served on the board of Community Nursing Services of Philadelphia, on the board of trustees for the United Fund and as chairman of the Community Nursing Services of Philadelphia.
Mrs. Dorrance spent considerable time and energy as a president of the Women's Board of American Oncologic Hospital, which preceded the Fox Chase Cancer Center.
A graduate of the Agnes Irwin School, Mrs. Dorrance served on the board of that school for many years.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, Mrs. Dorrance is survived by a daughter, Mary Irwin "Middy" Dorrance, a son, George M. Dorrance 3d, two granddaughters and a brother, E.H. Rogers Jr.
