Notes for James Howard II CARPENTER

James Howard Carpenter II, 94, formerly of Centerville and Hockessin, DE & Quarryville, PA. It is with great sadness that we announce his death on Monday, March 7, 2011 while residing in Skowhegan, ME, where he and his wife Mary had moved the previous February (2010). He passed away at home with the help of Hospice, in the loving presence of his wife and stepdaughter Elizabeth. Jim was born on May 9, 1916 in Centerville, DE to Walter D. and Sue (Seal) Carpenter.

Jim graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1939. While at the University, he played the sport he loved best, baseball. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant in the South Pacific. He was employed at National Vulcanized Fiber, Haveg Corporation and E.I. DuPont. He retired in 1981. After retirement, Jim occasionally taught engineering courses at the University of Delaware, was active in the 2000 Census taking and worked part-time at Good's Store in Quarryville, PA.

Jim was formerly married to Hazel Grey Jones. They had three children together.

On May 26, 1973, Jim married Mary Mercer at Limestone Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE. Throughout their marriage, Jim and Mary were avid golfers. They usually golfed wherever they traveled, including Pebble Beach, CA, the beautiful Calloway Gardens in Georgia, on the Big Island of Hawaii, in Maine and Canada and on the famous St. Andrews Old Course in Scotland.

Another of Jim's pastimes was woodworking, creating wonderful gifts for friends and family over the years. Jim was also a fine gardener, growing many lovely roses and vegetables with his wife Mary's help. Jim enjoyed music, during the war years he would often attend Big Band concerts and later, after returning to civilian life, Jim sang in the Lower Brandywine Church choir. He was also active in Church business, serving on several different committees, one of which chose the current pastor. When not busy in his wood shop, tending his gardens, or taking care of business at his desk, he could be found watching his beloved Phillies baseball. In fact, Liz and her partner Chip thought they would be able to convert him to become a Red Sox fan since he was now a New England resident, however, he resisted to the end!

Jim is survived by his wife Mary of Skowhegan, ME; his children: James Carpenter Jr. of Elkton, MD, Karen Carpenter of Wilmington, DE and his daughter Kay Thompson; first wife Hazel Carpenter of Chadds Ford: stepchildren Mary Lou Gamsby of Sunapee, NH, Georgia Farley of Parrish, FL and Elizabeth King of Madison, ME; grandchildren, Jac, Susan, Amy, and Jennifer; as well as Mary's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim was predeceased by a stepson, Jeffery States in 1995.

A Memorial service will be held Sunday April 17, at 10:30 am as part of the Palm Sunday Celebration at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church located at 101 Old Kennett Road, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be directly after the service in the church cemetery with a luncheon immediately following in the Fellowship Hall. Presiding over the service is Rev. David E. Lovelace.
