Notes for Flossie May HASTINGS

Flossie May Entrikin loved words, birds and the outdoors.
Mrs. Entrikin, of Columbia, died Sunday, June 26, 2005. She was 93.
Born in Neosho to Flossie and Thomas Hastings on May 7, 1912, she was always interested in the streams and outdoors surrounding her home. This interest carried through the rest of her life.
Mrs. Entrikin received her Bachelor of Journalism degree from MU in 1937. While at MU, she met her husband of almost 60 years, Ezra Entrikin.
'They had a class together in Jesse Hall,' said their son, Bart Entrikin. "He was late to class one day and thought it would be faster to climb the fire escape and sneak in through the window. When she saw him, she thought he was pretty dashing. The rest is, as they say, history."
They were married on April 13, 1937.
After receiving her degree, Mrs. Entrikin worked from home in Columbia as a freelance writer, publishing children's stories. Her most widely known story, "Percy the Pig with the Hiccups", has been memorized and performed by children throughout Columbia. She also had articles published in professional journals and in the Kansas City Star, Bart Entrikin said.
As one of the founders of the Columbia Audubon Society, Mrs. Entrikin was always an avid birdwatcher. Her three children recalled their mother's dedication to birdwatching trips, even in the dead of winter.
Along with an enjoyment of birdwatching, camping and outdoor activities were commonplace in the Entrikin family.
She also loved tennis and would often "beat the socks off" of whoever was on the court that day, her son said. He also said that when she was in the nursing home, she would talk about tennis, wishing she could get outside and play a game.
Mrs. Entrikin spent many years working for the Adult Basic Education Program at Douglass High School, where she taught English to foreign students.
"She would've done that work for free, it was that important to her," Bart Entrikin said.
Her love for words was apparent both at work and at home.
"She was quite a Scrabble player. She could beat us every time, even as she got older", said Ann Entrikin Thorne, Mrs. Entrikin's daughter.
She is survived by three children, Gael Entrikin of Rochester, Minn., Bart Entrikin of Columbia and Ann Entrikin Thorne of Savannah; one sister, Jewell Jeff of Neosho; and three grandchildren, Ean Entrikin and Jacob Thorne of Columbia, and Elizabeth Thorne of Savannah.
Her husband died earlier.
A memorial will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. A private burial will precede the gathering.
Memorial donations may be made to Columbia Audubon Society, P.O. Box 1331, Columbia, MO 65202 for the Columbia Audubon Society's Trailside Nature Center.
