Notes for Nathan GATCHELL

Being a birthright Quaker, Nathan had belonged to Nottingham Monthly Meeti
ng. From the East Nottingham Minutes: "Nathan, a lad of 18, gone apprent
ice in New Garden Monthly Meeting in North Carolina, April 30, 1774." (Th
is was a 4 year apprenticeship.) On July 2, 1774, he was received by tran
sfer into the New Garden Monthly Meeting; at the completion of this ter
m, he was returned, by transfer, to East Nottingham Monthly Meeting, M
ay 2, 1778.
Nathan was a Blacksmith. In order to fulfill his patriotic obligations during the Revolutionary War, he cleaned guns for the Army. On August 12, 1779, "cleans guns for the Army and is disowned" from the East Nottingham Monthly Meeting.
Nathan and his brother Jacob settled on "Gatchell's Chance," a portion of Elisha Sr.'s original tract of land. This is probably the land referred to in the following: "Jacob and Nathan inherited a parcel of land called 'Eminence in East Nottingham, Cecil County." On June 21, 1791, Nathan purchased from brother Jacob, 76 + acres "situated on the great road leading through East Nottingham towards Christiana Bridge, whereon the said Nathan and Jacob are settled in peaceable possession and which is called 'Gatchell Chance . . . formerly possessed by their Great-Grandfather, Elisha Gatchell . . . from him descended to his son Elisha. . . now both deceased."
Dated March 30, 1789, an Indenture between Elisha Gatchell Jr. (and wife Anne) and Nathan and Jacob Gatchell, Grandsons of Elisha Jr.: ". . . for divers good causes and services performed by Nathan and Jacob during their Grandfather's natural life. . . parcel of land called 'Eminence in East Nottingham . . . being part of a Lot of 490 acres originally laid out in Nottingham distinguished by No. 34 . . . "
