Notes for Richard Wickersham BARNARD

Richard Wickersham Barnard, 94, died on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at the Pocopson Home in West Chester.
Born May 21, 1915, in West Chester, he was the son of the late C. Percy Barnard and Jane Wickersham Barnard.
Mr. Barnard graduated from Unionville School in 1933 and attended George School for one year. He then attended Penn State College for two years, graduating in 1938 with a degree in horticulture.
He returned home to the family farm and later took over Barnard's Orchard with his brother, Sam Barnard, who still operates the cut flower greenhouses.
In 1948 he married Catherine Syphard Barnard and shared 61 years of marriage. Catherine died on Oct. 9, 2009, at Pocopson Home.
He served on the Unionville and Unionville-Chadds Ford school boards during the 1950s and again from the late 1960s through 1978.
He also served on the Central Chester County Vo-Tech School Board and the Chester-Delaware County Farmers Association Board of Directors.
He was an active firefighter and past president of the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company.
He was a member of the Chester-Delaware County Fruit Growers Association, the State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania and the East Lynn Grange.
He is survived by a son, Lewis M. Barnard; a brother, Samuel M. Barnard; and by nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be private and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
