Notes for Thomas Levering FRANKLIN

Thomas was reportedly estranged from his father, who turned him out of doors because he would not give up his resolve to be a clergyman. He then made his own way and put himself through college. He would stay out one year, tutoring and writing and studying by himself. Then he would return to college with some funds and go on with his classes. He and Ellen Milnor Klapp may have met at St. Andrews Episcopal Church where they were both confirmed, she in March 1836 and he eleven months later. Thomas attended Trinity College, Hartford, from which he graduated in 1841. In that year he and Ellen became engaged. In 1844, after a full course in the Alexandria Theological Seminary, Thomas was ordained to the deaconate. In that same year, two weeks after her father's death, Ellen and Thomas were married by Ellen's brother-in-law, Rev. Henry Whitesides. After leaving Pennsylvania, the Franklins first lived in Pennsville, Salem, New Jersey. His parishes include: Trinity Church, Moorestown, NJ, 1845-47; Christ Episcopal Church, Plymouth, Mass, 1848-49; St. Ann's, Amsterdam, NY; St. John's, Mt. Morris, NY, 1853-; Christ Church, Madison IN, c. 1871; Church of the Evangelists, Philadelphia. In 1866 Thomas founded the Jane Grey School for Young Ladies at Mt. Morris. Thomas received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Hobart College in 1871. About 1871, his health giving way, Thomas left New York for Madison, Indiana, but returned to Philadelphia in 1875. He became identified with the City Mission and took an interest in prison reform about which he wrote and spoke. For six years he was the editor of the Episcopal Register and contributed all through his life to various church papers.
