Notes for Catherine Yates NORRIS

Catherine Yates Norris was born at 1804 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia on 4 May 1862; she was educated at the Agnes Irwin School, Philadelphia. She attended classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, but was not allowed to take either anatomy or life classes.
She m. Charles Leland Harrison (I), son of John and Emily Gardner (Leland) Harrison on 29 April 1886. He died in 1913. On 29 December 1917 she m. Frank Thorne Patterson, a friend of many years, and with
him traveled extensively in America and in Europe.
As a young woman she had made a name for herself in miniatures and also executed commercial drawings; she attempted sculpture but found standing for long periods too exhausting.
She was a member of the Associate Committee of Women of the School of Industrial Art for thirty-four years, during seven of which she was president; she served on the board of the Philadelphia Musuem of Art for fifteen years. She was vitally interested in the Alcott House, a boarding house run for the benefit of working girls, and was on the early women's committee at the Philadelphia General Hospital. Always
ready to help young artists, she gave generously of her time, her money and her advice; her friendships were many and lasting. She died 23 Mar 1943 and is buried in Woodlands Cemetery.
