Notes for Herbert Whittaker Jr. GOODALL

HERBERT W. GOODALL JR., 78, a leader in horticultural and environmental groups, died Tuesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was a resident of Devon and had previously lived in Ithan and Bryn Mawr.

Mr. Goodall had served over the years as president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Appleford, a Villanova estate that includes an arboretum.

He also was chairman of the Philadelphia Flower Show and had served on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic.

Mr. Goodall had split his career between news reporting and public relations, starting with a job at the Evening Public Ledger and later moving on to work as a reporter and rewrite man for The Inquirer.

After about 10 years at The Inquirer, Mr. Goodall went to the advertising firm of Al Paul Lefton Co. and then to Atkin Kynett, where he was copy chief and then director of public relations. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Goodall belonged to the Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy, the Philadelphia Conservationists, the Merion Cricket Club, the Racquet Club and the First City Troop.

He was a member and former vestryman at Old Christ Church.

A graduate of the Solebury School, Mr. Goodall attended Yale University before pursuing journalism.

During World War II, he enlisted in the infantry and served in Italy and Africa. He was awarded five campaign ribbons and the Bronze Star and was discharged as a captain. Later he earned the rank of major in the reserves.

He was the husband of Jane Sinkler Goodall, who died in 1970, and of Louise Beggs Goodall, who died in 1984.

Survivors: sons, Herbert W. 3d and Francis S.; daughter, Julia Treat; stepchildren, Joseph M. McCready and Frances Kerns; five grandchildren, and a sister.

Services: 11 a.m. tomorrow, St. Davids Church, Valley Forge Road, Wayne; interment, in the churchyard.
