Notes for Kenneth Roland WOLFF

Kenneth Roland Wolff was born on December 7, 1920 to Frank and Helen Wolff of Lima, Pennsylvania. Kenneth spent his childhood, along with sisters Ann and Jean, among the trees and fields of Sunny Brae Orchards, which was founded in 1910 and given the name of his father’s boyhood home back in Bermuda. Kenneth attended Lima Elementary and Media High School.

Kenneth studied horticulture at The Pennsylvania State University and during the three summers between college classes, managed a blueberry farm in New Lisbon, NJ.

After graduation, Ken entered the Army during WWII and served as a medic in the 542nd Medical Hospital Ship Platoon. In all, he made 24 Atlantic crossings, 18 during the war in various ships, followed by 6 additional crossings on the SS St Albans Victory Ship after the war.

Upon discharge from the Army, Kenneth met Glennlyn Fern Curtis of Marshfield Vermont, daughter of Earle and Esther Curtis. Kenneth and Glennlyn were married on September 10, 1949. Over the next 21 years, Daddy Ken and Mama Gennie had nine children: Conrad, Virginia, Nathan (deceased), Peter (deceased), Katherine, Rebecca (deceased), Winifred, Andrea and Francis. They also have 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Daddy Ken has been a loving, energetic family man. He often enjoyed sitting on the front porch with his children wrapped in blankets as cool, summer thunderstorms would roll in. He loved music and song and sometimes would serenade his family and friends on his trumpet or harmonica. A Sunday walk in the woods with the family was a common occurrence, something Ken enjoyed until late in his life.

The serenity of nature was most important to Ken. He thrilled in canoeing with his family, down the Brandywine Creek or gliding across a peaceful lake. His and Gennie’s honeymoon was a week-long canoe trip on the beautiful waters of Saranac Lake in New York. Gennie likes to say “he could silently steer his canoe from the back and never even take his paddle out of the water and still go straight as an arrow”.

Kenneth, a dedicated Fruit Grower and Horticulturist, loved his work in the great outdoors, producing high quality apples, peaches, corn, tomatoes, pears, plums, pumpkins, squash and other fruits and vegetables. All the while, he made growing look easy. Sunny Brae Orchards and its farm market, Wolff’s Apple House, have been “Always in Season” for over 105 years, operating as a business deeply rooted in family and community.

Ken converted to Catholicism in 1951 and has long been a devoted, involved member of Saint Francis de Sales parish in Lenni, PA.

On April 13, 2016, when Kenneth passed away, he had reached the age of 95. He and his wife Glennlyn had been married for over 66 years. They spent their entire married lives in their only family home on Pennell Road in Lima, PA. Ken’s life was lovingly surrounded with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, fellow fruit growers and many wonderful friends.

With gentle, natural charm, Kenneth instilled in others a sense of humanity, generosity, simplicity, spirituality, justice, humor, energy and love. He possessed a sincere interest in people and a concern for their well-being. He took time to visit folks and would often arrive bearing fruits and vegetables from the family farm.

Kenneth Roland Wolff will be deeply missed.
