Young, Lila Camp
SURRY - Lila Camp Young, of Four Mill Tree in Surry County, Va., died on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004. Born Jan. 8, 1932, she grew up in Franklin, Va., and was the daughter of the late Lila Overstreet Camp and Paul Ryland Camp. Lila graduated from Vassar College in 1953 and worked as a social worker at St. Christopher's Chapel of the Lower East Side Mission of Trinity Church in Manhattan. She married the Rev. Merrill Orne Young on Nov. 10, 1956, and they lived in New York and Boston. In 1966 Lila and her husband purchased Four Mill Tree, a James River plantation in Surry, Va., where she spent many of her happiest times. As avid horsewoman, Lila was also a longtime board member of the Virginia Opera. She was always interested in the welfare of the people of Surry and was a generous contributor to the causes that benefited them. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Merrill Orne Young; her children, Paul Ryland Camp Young, Bradford Sidney Johnston Young, Lisa Dawson, Louisa McClanahan, Lila White, and their families, which include 11 grandchildren. The Burial Office and Holy Communion will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at St. Luke's Church at Benn's Church, Va., near Smithfield, Va. Interment will follow at Four Mile Tree. The family will receive friends at the home immediately following the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Surry Public Library or to the Virginia Opera.
