Notes for Oscar Thomas CANBY

Oscar T. Canby, 89, of Martinsburg, (a former 50 year resident of Springfield, Mass.) died Monday, July 31, 2006, at Heartland of Martinsburg.
Born Jan. 31, 1917, in Berkeley County, the son of the late Hunter D. and Rachel Butts Canby.
He was retired from St. Johnsbury Trucking Company of West Springfield, Mass., and was previously employed by the VA Medical Center of Martinsburg.
Mr. Canby was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army, 79th Division, 315th Infantry. He served in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe and was the recipient of four Bronze Battle Stars.
He was a softball and baseball player until he was 60 years old. Locally, he was a member of the Irish Hill, No. 5 Firehall and Blue Sox Baseball Teams.
He is survived by a son and caregiver, George Canby of Spring Mills; two brothers, Doug and Charles C. Canby; and one sister, Helen Butler, all of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Jackson Canby; one brother, Gold L. Canby; and three sisters, Lula Cramer, Mary Willingham and Lillian Weir.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home. Military graveside services will be held at Tuscarora Cemetery.
