Jane Levis Carter, 93, a Delaware County historian and preservationist, died June 6 at White Horse Village, a retirement community in Newtown Square.
Ms. Carter grew up on her family's farm, Oak Lodge, in Edgmont Township and lived there most of her life until moving to Newtown Square in 1993. For many years she managed the farm and entertained corporate executives and foreign dignitaries who were guests of her half-brother, Walker L. Cisler, an internationally known energy specialist.
She was a past volunteer and newsletter editor for the Colonial Plantation at Ridley Creek State Park, and was active in efforts to restore historic buildings in Delaware County. She had been a founding member of the Edgmont Civic Association and had recently served on the Delaware County Heritage Commission.
Ms. Carter contributed articles to local newspapers and wrote and took photographs for the travel section of Gourmet magazine. She published two books on poetry, a history of the Lenni Lenape Indians, and histories of paper mills along Darby Creek and of Rose Tree families.
In 1976 she published Edgmont, The Story of a Township. That year she received an award from the Freedoms Foundation for her work as a historian and preservationist.
Ms. Carter, who was divorced twice, used her maiden name. She is survived by daughters Jeannine Adams and Martha Nolte; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and former husband William Nolte. She is predeceased by her first former husband, George E. Earnshaw, and their son George 3d.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. July 24 at Willistown Friends Meeting, 7069 Goshen Rd., Newtown Square.
