Notes from ROLAND PENNOCK
10/15/94

William and Mary Martin married against his parents' wishes. They sent him abroad for a year in hopes that he would change his mind; but he didn't. He married her when he returned. It is said that they were not made comfortable back in home territory, so they moved to Roanoke and later on to Ohio. She was Irish and presumably Catholic. It is speculated that the fact that she was Catholic had something to do with their disapproval. They proceeded to have eight children.
