Notes for Henry Cowgill CORBIT

Henry Cowgill Corbit, father of Emma C. Ogden, began commercial life in the dry-goods trade, and in after-years was engaged in the importation of silks and ribbons, establishing an extensive and successful business. He was a member of the Board of Commissioners of Spring Garden Institute when residing in that district; subsequently, a member of City Councils. In 1846 he was the author of the ordinance proposing a subscription by the city of $2,500,000 to the stock of the railroad (now the Penna. Central) connecting the city with Pittsburg, and through his unwavering perseverance it was adopted. He was a member of the Board of Managers of the Preston Retreat, and an early Director of the Mercantile Library Co. In the early part of his business career he was compelled to make an arrangement with his creditors; feeling that his financial affairs would warrant it, he determined to pay, although no longer legally liable, all of said indebtedness by applying over $60,000 to that purpose, and reimbursed his creditors by paying every dollar of their extinguished claims.
