Notes for Judith S. BRAUDE

Judith Braude Balderston, 67, a Berkeley research economist whose areas of study included public policy on nutrition and financing for education, died Wednesday of breast cancer.
Beyond her career as an economist and economic consultant, she gave her time to a variety of community programs in Berkeley.
''She loved life in all its aspects and was always full of energy, wonderful spirit and great humor,'' said John Martin, who worked closely with Mrs. Balderston in his capacity as executive director of Berkeley's Stiles Hall, an organization that coordinates student volunteer work on community projects.
Mrs. Balderston was born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1926, attended high school there and graduated from Swarthmore College with a degree in mathematics.
In 1949, she married Frederick Balderston, and the next year, she and her husband moved to Cambridge, Mass., where she served on the staff of the Harvard Economic Research Project.
In 1953, Mrs. Balderston and her husband moved to Berkeley.
She was a member of the board of the Northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. She also served on the boards of Stiles Hall and the National Peace Garden in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Balderston served as a research associate in the University of California at Berkeley School of Education from 1974 to 1978. She entered doctoral study at the University in 1979 and received her doctorate in 1982. From 1982 to 1991, she was affiliated with the Project on Intake and Function in Berkeley's Department of Nutritional Services.
Mrs. Balderston is survived by her husband and four children, Daniel Balderston of New Orleans, Sara Brooke of Arlington, Mass., Thomas Balderston of Ardmore, Pa., and Jonathan Balderston of Berkeley; and by five grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions to the Judith Balderston Fund at Stiles Hall, 2400 Bancroft Way, Berkeley 94704.
A memorial service will be held January 9 at the Faculty Club at the University of California.
