Pauline Louise du Pont Harrison, 89, died in her New York City home last week, family members said.
Growing up, Harrison – nicknamed "P.L." – lived in the home of her parents, Henry Francis and Ruth Wales du Pont, which her father founded as Winterthur Museum in 1951.
Now called Winterthur Museum & Country Estate, the 982-acre facility has a research center and library, but is best known for its 175 period room displays and its more than 85,000 objects from 1640 to 1860, considered one of the nation's top collections of American decorative arts.
Harrison was on Winterthur's board for 40 years, including serving as vice chairwoman.
She helped ensure the museum's financial stability and revolutionized its interaction with the public when, in the 1980s, she took a controversial position by favoring merchandise and catalog sales as a new revenue source to support the sprawling facility off Kennett Pike north of Wilmington.
Along with many other members of the du Pont family, Harrison was listed in the Encyclopedia of American Wealth.
Her son Alfred C. Harrison Jr. said she continued to be an avid bridge player who won regional and sectional tournaments into her 70s.
Harrison also was a longtime and award-winning supporter and leader in Planned Parenthood of New York City and co-founder of the Republican Pro-Choice Alliance.
Her health had been failing for several months before her Sept. 11 death, when she died while napping, her son said.
In addition to Alfred and her husband Boyd de Brossard, Harrison is survived by her sister, Ruth Lord; another son, Henry F. du Pont Harrison; a daughter, Ruth Grobe; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, according to family members. Her first husband, Alfred C. Harrison, died in 1973. She had a daughter, Alison Harrison Gill, who died in 1993.
Burial will be private, according to Walter B. Cooke Funeral Home in New York City, which is handling arrangements.
A memorial service and reception will be 2 p.m., Sept. 29, at St. James Episcopal Church, 865 Madison Ave., New York City, family members said. Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations to Planned Parenthood of New York City, 26 Bleeker St., New York NY 10012 or Winterthur Museum & Country Estate, Winterthur DE 19735.
