Elizabeth Lea Carpenter DuPont
Age 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Friday, April 6, 2012.
Lea will be dearly missed by her life-partner of many years Benito Garozzo, her son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Annie Nielsen and her grandchildren Alexandra, Ripley and Walker Nielsen. Lea is also survived by her sisters, There Fiechter of Greenville, Delaware and Nanno Bienstock of Wallkill, New York.
Lea lived for many years in Italy and Florida as she followed her passion for competitive bridge. Among her many accomplishments, she was a two-time NABC titlist, winning the Keohane North American Swiss Teams in 1984 and the Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss in 2009. She was a noted international player as well and was the first woman to ever win, with partner Antonio Vivaldi, the Open Pairs competition at the International Bridge Festival in Venice, Italy. Additionally, along with team members Benito Garozzo, Alan Sontag and Eddie Kantar, she won the Open Team competition at the Venice International Bridge Festival. She held the ranks of World Master and Seniors International Master. She won the bronze medal in 1985 playing for the Italian women's team in the European Team Championships. Playing with Benito Garozzo, her partner in life as well as bridge, she won a silver medal in the World Championship Senior Pairs in 1998. She was a fixture for more than 40 years at the World, European and North American Bridge Championships.
Funeral service will be held privately.
