BIDDLE, RICHARD, lawyer, born, Philadelphia, March 25, 1796; admitted to the bar in Pittsburgh; was member of Congress, 1837-1841; died Pittsburgh, July 7, 1847.

BIDDLE, Richard (nephew of Edward Biddle and uncle of Charles John Biddle), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Philadelphia, Pa., March 25, 1796; pursued classical studies; was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1811; served as a volunteer in the Washington Guards during the War of 1812; studied law; was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia in 1817 and commenced practice in Pittsburgh the same year; went to England in 1827, remained there three years, and published valuable works upon American discovery and travel; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses and served from March 4, 1837, until his resignation in 1840; resumed the practice of law in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he died on July 6, 1847; interment in Allegheny Cemetery.
