Notes for Mary Biddle SINCLAIR

Mary ("Polly") Biddle Sinclair Buck Krakora died peacefully on March 12, 2009, at her home in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. after a long illness.

Mrs. Krakora was born in Philadelphia on August, 25, 1926 to Mary Hewes Biddle Sinclair and John Stephens Sinclair. She was educated in Quaker schools including Germantown Friends School and Westtown School. She attended Bennington College in Vermont. Mrs. Krakora lived in Wilmington, DE from 1951 to 1974. She was married to architect and politician Clayton Douglass Buck, Jr. from 1947 to 1976. She served as the National Republican Committeewoman from Delaware from 1956 to 1960 and as Secretary of the National Republican Party from 1960 to 1964. She owned and operated Books, Inc., a general interest bookstore in Greenville, DE, from 1964 to 1974. She served as Chairman of the first Delaware Arts Council from 1968 to 1974. In 1974, Mrs. Krakora moved to Washington, D.C. and worked as Director of the Office of Performing Arts and Public Media at the National Endowment for the Arts under, its chairman, Nancy Hanks. After her marriage to Joseph Krakora in 1977, she moved to Waterford, CT, to serve as Co-Director of the Music Theatre Program at the O'Neill Theatre Center. Mr. and Mrs. Krakora moved to Chicago, IL in 1980 where she worked as the Director of the Chicago City Ballet School under the leadership of Maria Tallchief. In 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Krakora returned to Washington, D.C. where Mrs. Krakora served as a Trustee of the Marpat Foundation, The Tudor Place Foundation, and The Environmental Film Festival; as Consultant to the Social Office in the Clinton Administration; and as an advisor and volunteer to a variety of civic, cultural, and educational institutions and causes. She was also an accomplished painter and book binder. A mentor, colleague, and friend to many, she shall be missed.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Krakora; her 4 children, David Buck of Seattle, WA, John "Jeb" Buck of Kuranda, North Queensland, Australia, Alice "Lisa" Decandia of Katonah, Y, and Mary "Mabbie" Buck of Armidale, New South Wales, Australia; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Sylvia Carr Berking of Midlothian, VA, David M. Sinclair of Darien, CT, and John B. Sinclair of Bainbridge Island, WA; and her longtime care companions, Ligaya Lo and Lodie Convocer

A memorial service in Washington is planned for May.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor may be made to The Environmental Film Festival,
