Deceased Name: HENRY CANBY BIDDLE JR., OF LONG-PROMINENT FAMILY
Henry Canby Biddle Jr., 74, a member of a family long prominent in Philadelphia affairs, died Tuesday at Highlight, his home in Newtown Square.
He followed the family tradition and was involved in civic and cultural affairs.
Mr. Biddle was descended from the Owen Biddle branch of the Philadelphia Biddle family.
Owen Biddle, a Quaker merchant, served as Assistant Commissary General of the Continental Army during the Revolution. In 1779, he purchased Peel Hall, a country estate, from Richard Penn. The site now is Girard College.
Henry Canby Biddle Jr. was a horseman. He was active with the Pickering Hunt and served as secretary of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair.
Reared in Wayne, he spent much of his life in Chester County.
Until its sale in 1968, he lived at Canby Lodge, a 148-acre estate in West Pikeland Township that offered an 18-room residence, stables, tennis courts and riding trails.
Surviving are his wife, Esther A. McNeely Biddle; sons, Henry C. 3d, Augustus P.G. and Grafton M.; stepdaughter, Sharon S. Bacon; stepsons, Warren B. and Peter M. Scott; two grandchildren, and a sister, Augusta Biddle Scheetz.
Services will be held at 11 this morning at the Gladwyne Presbyterian Church, Gladwyne. Burial will be private.
