Notes for Thomas D. INGRAM

Thomas D Ingram was born in East Bradford Township Chester County Pa and is a son of William Torbert and Elizabeth (Darlington) Ingram, both of whom were born in this County. He resided in the county until 1872 when he entered Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia; graduating from that institution he engaged in the practice of his profession in that city. While there he delivered a course of lectures on "General Pathology" and on "Physical Diagnosis" etc. He was Chief of Medical Clinic at college. In 1880 he returned to his native county opening an office in West Chester. In 1887 he removed to Washington D C, where two years later he accepted a position as Assistant Medical Referee in the Pension Department. Soon after he was appointed Medical Referee, Bureau of Pensions, Interior Department, which he held until May 1893 when he was succeeded by T F Baugh of New York due to the change to the administration. Dr Ingram twice visited Europe traveling through Great Britain and a portion of the Continent.

He married first May 23 1866 Ellen B. Way of West Chester, Pa issue on son (died as infant), second, December 17 1879 Annie Wallace of Philadelphia.

Doctor Ingram is perhaps one of the best read physicians that the county has produced aside from his professional work he has given some attention to politics working vigorously for a reform in the ballot. In his book on Representative Government, he thoroughly and intelligently discusses the subject. He evidently given it much thought and consideration and proposes a remedy for the evils which attend the delegate system in making nominations for office and suggests a method free from objection.

The book received many very favorable comments from public press from periodicals and from leading men both in this country and in Europe among whom were Hon. John Bright, Prof Ernest Naville Senators Ingalls and David Davis, Geo William Cartis, Pres. White of Cornell University and others.
