Joseph learned the trade of shoemaker and when a young man leased a farm known
as the Hop Yard Farm in Mill Creek Hundreds, New Castle, Delaware. He lived
there for 17 years then returned to Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was a
member of the Society of Friends.
