Notes for Nicholas WALN


NICHOLAS WALN, b. circa 1650; d. 1721, at Burholme, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Before his marriage he removed to Chapelcroft. On 7th June, 1682, Settle Monthly Meeting issued a joint certificate to him and family, and others, all more or less related by ties of blood, who intended removing to Pennsylvania. This party accompanied William PENN, Lord Proprietary of Pennsylvania on his first voyage to his Province and arrived on the Welcome at
New Castle, Delaware River, Territories of Pennsylvania, 27th October, 1682. 21st and 22d April, Nicholas WALN bought of William PENN 1000 acres of land in Pennsylvania. He settled about 1st January, 1682-1683, on the Neshaminy in Middletown Township, where he erected his dwelling and in 1696 he removed to Philadelphia County. He was a Member of the First Assembly 12th March, 1682-1683; Represented Bucks County in the Assembly, 1687, 1689, 1692
and 1695; Member of the First Grand Jury, 25th October, 1683; Sheriff of Bucks County, 1685.
Member of the Assembly from Philadelphia County, 1696-1697, 1700-1701, 1713-1715, 1717; was named as one of the Directors of Public Schools with James LOGAN, Isaac NORRIS, Edward SHIPPEN and others in 1711; he was practically the founder of Middletown Monthly Meeting; m. 1st October, 1673, at Slainmerow, Jane TURNER.
