Notes for John Nelson PAXSON

John Nelson Paxson was born September 4, 1831, in the village of Elkton, near Lisbon. He was a son of the late Rev. Joseph Paxson of the United Brethren church, who died nine years ago at Elkton. On May 5, 1853, Mr. Paxson was married at East Rochester, to Hannah Beata Colestock of that city. They located at New Chambersburg where he successfully conducted a wagon making shop.

Deceased enlisted during the late war, in company D, 115 Ohio volunteer infantry. He served for three years during which he was made a corporal and later promoted to the rank of sergeant. At the close of his army service, he brought his family to Mt. Union, where he entered into a partnership with Henry W. Martin, in the manufacture of carriages. From here he went to Canton and accepted a position in the Aultman mower and reaper works.

In 1867 Mr. Paxson, with his family, located in Alliance where they have resided ever since. He belonged to the Canton lodge of Odd Fellows and was an active member of John C. Fremont Post, G. A. R. His acquaintance was without limit and he bore the admirition and esteem of all. In church work he was deeply interested and he devoted much time to the meetings of the Patterson street Home Mission society and also to those of the Epworth League of the Methodist church.

Few lectures, public meetings and elevating entertainment have been given in this city that Mr. Paxson did not attend. He was also an extensive reader and kept well versed on all the topics of the day. At public gatherings when a speech was needed, John Paxson was usually among the first called upon, and he could deliver an extemporaneous talk, filled with natural wit and sound arguement, in a most eloquent and interesting manner. In politics he was an uncompromising Republican.

Deceased leaves besides his sorrowing wife, a son, Theodore Parker Paxson, cashier of the Pennsylvania railway freight depot at Canton, and Miss Fannie B. C. Paxson of the REVIEW. Another daughter, Mary, died in infancy at Mt. Union. Rev. Josiah Paxson of La Grande, Iowa, and Jesse Paxson of Alliance, are brothers. Mrs. Hannah McLain and Mrs. Henry Barton, both of Elkton, are sisters. One grandchild, four week old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Paxson of Canton, also survives him.
