Notes for Leedom Kirk JOHN
Leedom Kirk John of Coatesville Leedom Kirk John, age 97, traded in his mustang wings for his heavenly wings, going home to be with his LORD, Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016. He was the husband of “Linda” Ethel Zell John. Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Lawrence John and Hazel Kirk John. He is survived by his son Lee K. John (Kitty March), daughter, Elaine D’Angelo (John), grandson, Matthew L. Fesak, and brother Lawrence L. John. As a graduate of the old Coatesville High School, class of 1937, he was in the band and earned three letters in soccer, swimming and track. He was an eagle scout, and a member of the Order of the Arrow at Camp Horseshoe. Kirk John served during World WAR II as a fighter pilot and holds two presidential citations: the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor in combat and the air medal with ten oak leaf clusters. He flew 47 combat missions against Germany, destroying five German aircraft, becoming an ACE in the 55th fighter group of the 8th Air Force. He flew 334 combat hours in a P51 Mustang. He was a member of the Gideon’s International and was welcomed into the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in West Chester. He was a member of the Coatesville Senior Center, serving as president of the board for a term. At age 8, he became a member of the local YMCA, and enjoyed 82 years of consecutive membership. He was a member of the Downingtown American Legion Post #475, and was a volunteer at the Coatesville VA Hospital for over 20 years. He and his wife served meals on wheels for 30 years, and together they were active in the Senior Games at the county, state and national levels, earning numerous gold, silver and bronze medals. Mr. John was well known in the Coatesville area, having delivered ice and milk as a boy, and later working as an insurance agent for 35 years. He loved the LORD, and for 71 years, the First Baptist Church of Coatesville was his church home. Since then, he has attended Parkesburg Baptist church. He has served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and deacon. A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Fri. Nov. 11 (Veteran’s Day) at the chapel at Tel Hai Retirement Community. There will be a private interment, followed by a memorial service at the Parkesburg Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 14 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkesburg Baptist Church, (103 West St., Parkesburg, PA 19365), or Gideons International (www2.gideons.org)
