Notes for Howard Barker FUSSELL

Howard Barker Fussell, of Hershey’s Mill, formerly of Paoli Howard Barker Fussell, died at home surrounded by family on June 6, 2016. Howard was 89 years old. A graduate of Friends Central and the University of Pennsylvania, and an alumnus of Swarthmore College, Howard was a retired Vice President of Lavino Shipping Company. In his younger years, his work allowed him to travel abroad to Europe, Asia and Africa. Howard was an avid tennis player well into his 70s. He was one of the original members of Waynesborough Country Club, where he was a fixture on the tennis courts, winning multiple men’s and mixed doubles tournaments and playing on inter-club teams. In his later years, Howard played on Waynesborough’s bridge team. Howard had a wry sense of humor that kept his family and friends very entertained. He was a master gardener, frustratingly clever chess and bridge player, wonderful writer, ardent reader, devotee of the New York Times crossword puzzle, and a talented musician who played the violin for many, many years and, later in life, the piano. There was seldom a day in recent years when Howard wasn’t at the piano. His talents, sense of humor, conversation, and wit will be sorely missed. In addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Anne (McLear), Howard is survived by daughters Susan Runyon Fussell and Sandra Barker Fussell, son Mark Lewis Fussell, daughter-in-law Rebecca Shen and five grandchildren. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
