Notes for Isabelle CUSICK

Isabelle McNulty's parents always encouraged her to study hard so she could go to college.

She did -- twice, graduating with a two-year teaching degree from Slippery Rock College after high school and earning a bachelor of science in elementary education from the University of Pittsburgh at 51.

Isabelle McNulty of Shaler died on Wednesday, May 29, 2013. She was 95.

Mrs. McNulty took inspiration from her mother, who sold eggs to help her pay for college. "She was very motivated and wanted to be the best at what she did," said Mrs. McNulty's daughter, Ruth Peterman of Lake Bluff, Ill.

Raised in a tiny farming community near Slippery Rock, Mrs. McNulty was salutatorian of her high school graduating class. She taught in a one-room Amish school house for a year before marrying her high school sweetheart John McNulty. They were together until his death in 1996.

After raising their four children, Mrs. McNulty enrolled in evening classes at Pitt. She taught grade school for 17 years in several Pittsburgh Public Schools.

"She really loved the children she taught and was dedicated to helping them. For her, being a teacher was all about the kids and giving them positive encouragement," Peterman said.

When she retired from teaching in 1980, Mrs. McNulty turned her attention to her grandchildren, Peterman said.

"She was fond of telling the kids that they were 'just perfect' and that she was always on their side."

Mrs. McNulty enjoyed traveling, and was able to visit many countries because one of her daughters was a flight attendant, Peterman said.

"She was born and raised in a small farm town, but she was always ready to hop on a plane for an adventure to a different part of the world."

Mrs. McNulty's "happy and peaceful personality" stayed with her as she grew older, Peterman said. "She was a very special woman who was easy to fall in love with."

In addition to her daughter, Ruth, Mrs. McNulty is survived by her daughters, Carol Loyd of Cullman, Ala., and Jean DiMartino of Sherman, Conn.; a son, Kenneth McNulty of Atkinson, N.H.; a sister, Estella Thompson of Sulfur Springs, Texas; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Relatives and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Bock Funeral Home, 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd. in Shaler. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Elfinwild Presbyterian Church, 3200 Mt. Royal Blvd., followed by burial in Mt. Royal Cemetery.
