Notes for Joanne OUWENEEL

TOWNSEND - Joanne Ouweneel Passmore passed away Friday, April 29, 2005, in Townsend. She was 77.

Mrs. Passmore was born and raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm.

She attended Blackburn College in Illinois and the University of Wisconsin, graduating from the latter with a bachelor of science in agriculture and a master's in agricultural journalism. She came to the University of Delaware in 1950 as assistant editor in the Agricultural Extension Service. Through 4-H activities, she met her husband, with whom she owned and operated a dairy farm in southern New Castle County for 42 years.

Mrs. Passmore was very interested in Delaware agriculture - its past, present, and most especially agriculture's future in our increasingly populated state. She authored two books: one on the history of agriculture in the First State and one on the Delaware State Grange; and permanently preserved for agriculture the farm where she lived.

Her love of agriculture, preservation and history was particularly evident in her involvement with the Delaware Agricultural Museum in Dover, which she helped found. She was a director and volunteer there for many years, and served as president of its board.

Mrs. Passmore was active in agricultural and community organizations and became secretary of the National Grange in 1986, the first woman to hold that office since the organization was founded in 1867. She served on the boards of Wilmington Friends School and the Corbit-Calloway Library, various University of Delaware advisory committees, and as chair of the Governor's Council on Agriculture.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Wills Passmore; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Susan Passmore and Malcolm Bedell Jr. of Colorado, Judith Passmore of New Jersey, and Cynthia Passmore-McLaughlin and Daniel McLaughlin of Illinois; a grandson, Derek McLaughlin; a sister and a brother-in-law, Laura and Craig Beane of Wisconsin; a niece and a nephew.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Delaware Agricultural Museum chapel, where a reception will follow.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Delaware Agricultural Museum Endowment, 866 North DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or to the Appoquinimink Meeting, c/o Wilmington Monthly Meeting of Friends, 401 N. West Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
