Notes for Albert Kenneth HOPTON

A. Kenneth Hopton of Coatesville Albert Kenneth Hopton of Coatesville, passed away at home on Jan. 20, 2015. Born on Aug. 23, 1932 in Rock Run, he was the son of the late George W. and Anna (Leslie) Hopton. Kenny was a 1950 graduate of S. Horace Scott High School. A standout baseball pitcher in high school, Kenny spent time pitching in the minor leagues for the St. Louis Browns before returning to Coatesville to marry his high school sweetheart, Eloise (Marshman) Hopton in 1951. Kenny started a career at Lukens Steel Company in 1951, eventually rising to the position of Melt Shop Supervisor. Retiring from the mill, Kenny then enjoyed twenty years as a sales representative and consultant to the steel industry. He was also a past president and Toastmaster of the Electric Metal Makers Guild. With a love for steel and the people he worked with at Lukens, Ken hosted his "Lukens Retirees Picnic" each summer for forty-five years. Possessing a gift for storytelling, Ken was quick to laugh and had an exemplary work ethic. Throughout his life, he lovingly provided for his family and the needs of many others with his huge, generous heart. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. Ken was a long-time member and past trustee of the Thorndale United Methodist Church. In 2005, Ken was inducted into the Coatesville Sports Hall of Fame. Ken belonged to many civic organizations and additionally he was a member of Brandywine Goddard Lodge #383 F. & A.M. Words cannot express the depth of our loss or the joy of having had him in our lives. The family thankfully acknowledges the support and care provided by Neighborhood Hospice. The last of his immediate family, Kenny was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond, Ralph, Charles, Robert and James and also his sisters, Thelma and Sara. He is survived by his adoring wife, Eloise; devoted daughters, Judith (Maurice) Hare, Nancy (David) Hemberger, Brenda (Raymond Peters) Hopton and Diane Hopton. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Marissa (Abdul) Ouaddafi, Kenneth and Andrew Shepherd, Michael Poltrone, Jr., Jean (Brad) Fox, Megan Hare and Daniel Hemberger. Kenny was also blessed with four great grandchildren, Camren and Colin Shepherd, and Sabrina Ouaddafi and Gavin Fox. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Hephzibah Baptist Church, 2237 Strasburg Road, Coatesville.
